About Conversation
Dongyeon Koh & Dorian Vale

This conversation began when Dorian Vale, the pen name of the director of Museum One, reached out to the art historian Dongyeon Koh. It began with a conversation about Post-Interpretive Criticism, and from there, the conversation naturally developed.
Above all, this conversation began because it was simply too interesting to see Dongyeon Koh, with a background in art history and art criticism, and Dorian, with backgrounds in aesthetics, anthropology, ethics, and physics, unfold their thoughts from such completely different perspectives. We began to imagine two ways of developing these conversations. One was to turn them into a book connecting them to art criticism and hermeneutics; the other was to publish each conversation separately in our respective webzines as it took place.
In fact, this conversation did not begin with any particular purpose. But ultimately, how do we interpret? Why do we look at something, and how do we look at it? And through that process, how do we come to understand ourselves and human beings? We thought it was important to record and upload the process of two humanists, living in entirely different parts of the world, continually working through these questions.
Or perhaps, what we thought was that this could become a kind of good antidote for humanists who, inevitably, have to produce interpretations with particular purposes and, through those interpretations, secure their own economic, social, and political positions. This was not a conversation intended to arrive at the right answer, but rather to leave behind the process itself: listening to each other, misunderstanding each other, asking questions again, and looking at things in another way. In that sense, this conversation began.
A little late, perhaps, but let us also talk about the title.
The title Conversation was proposed by Dongyeon Koh. First of all, Dongyeon has always disliked complicated titles. She believes that a title should show, as clearly and directly as possible, what it is that we are trying to do. She also believes that, ultimately, neither titles nor people's names really belong to anyone.
There was also a very personal reason why she proposed this title. Dongyeon Koh likes Francis Ford Coppola’s film The Conversation (1974). If we watch this 1970s film again today, setting aside a somewhat fan-like perspective, parts of it may feel a little dated. Nevertheless, what appealed to Dongyeon was the idea of surveillance—the act of listening in on others.
The protagonist of The Conversation is a man who professionally listens in on other people's secrets. At the same time, however, he is a figure who is completely hidden from the gaze of others. He listens to other people's stories, while remaining, in turn, invisible to them.
Perhaps Dongyeon wanted to bring this aspect into our conversation as well. Conversation is a place where one's thoughts can be revealed without much restraint, but at the same time, she wanted the title to reflect the “situation” in which the two authors wish to remain forever as others to one another—or perhaps are inevitably destined to remain so.
The more we speak, the more it seems that we reveal ourselves, but in the very act of speaking, we also conceal another part of ourselves. No matter how long we talk, we can never completely know another person's thoughts. There is always a gap between words and interpretation, between explanation and understanding.
Perhaps this conversation begins precisely in that gap. Two people continue to talk in an attempt to understand one another, while knowing that they can never completely understand each other. And in the process, they gradually come to understand what they are looking at, why they are looking at it in that way, and, ultimately, who they themselves are.
And so, the title is simply Conversation.

From Dongyeon Koh to Dorian
What is post-criticism? And why did you become interested in it?
I think it would be good if you could write something and send it to me, and then I can respond to what you have written. We could each post our pieces next week. Since I was the one who first suggested the idea of post-criticism and ways of living, I would like you to talk again, even if some of it may be repetitive, about the basic definition of post-criticism and, through it, the attitude you have chosen toward art and life. Then I will write about what I felt as I read your text.
Thank you.
