About

고동연은 전후 미술사와 영화이론으로 뉴욕 시립대학교에서 박사 학위를 받았다. 귀국 후 아트 2021의 공동디렉터(2008-2010), 신도 작가지원프로그램(시냅, 2011-2014)의 한국 심사위원, 국내외 아트 레지던시의 멘토 및 운영위원으로 활동해오고 있다. 또한 독립기획자로서 일민미술관, 인사미술공간 등에서 전시를 열었고, 가장 최근에는 2017년 고양 야외조각축제의 커미셔너였다. 또한 고동연은 동아시아 현대미술에서 대중소비문화나 역사적 기억과 관련된 논문과 리뷰를『통섭 아시아문화연구지(Inter-Asia Cultural Studies)』(2010, 2013, 런던), 『사진과 문화(Photography and Culture)』(2015, 런던), 모던아트 아시아(Modern Art Asia)에 발표해 왔다. 최근 저서로는 『팝아트와 1960년대 미국사회』(2015), 『Staying Alive: 우리시대 큐레이터들의 생존기』(2016), 『소프트파워에서 굿즈까지: 1990년대 이후 동아시아 현대미술과 예술대중화 전략들』(2018)이 있다. 한예종, 홍익대, 서울대 등에 출강하였다. 현재 『Post-memory Generation in South Korea(한국의 후-기억 세대)』(영문, 가제)를 집필 중이다. 

Koh received her Ph. D in Art History and Doctorate Certificate on Film Theory from the City University of New York in 2006. After returning to South Korea, Koh worked as a co-director of the Gallery Art 2021 (2008-2010) and a critic and mentor in numerous art residencies and museums in South Korea. As an independent curator, she co-curated an exhibition Up in the Air: From Incheon to Yeoido at Ilmin Art Museum, Seoul in 2012 and most recently served as the commissioner of 2017 Goyang Outdoor Sculpture Festival. Koh's academic and critical writings on popular and consumerist culture in East Asian countries and historical memories have been published in Inter-Asia Cultural Studies (Routledge, 2010, 2013), Flash Art, Modern Art Asia and Photography and Culture (Bloomsbury, 2015). Her recent books include Pop Art and American Society in the 1960s (Seoul, 2015), Staying Alive: The Survival Tale of Curators Today (Seoul, 2016), and From Softpower to Goods: Alternative Forms of Exhibitions and Populist Artistic Practices in Post-1990s East Asian Art (Seoul, 2018). She taught at Korea National University of Arts, Hongik University, and Seoul National University. She is currently writing a book Post-memory Generation in South Korea.
