홍대 앞 2세대 대안공간과 ‘대안공간’의 확장: 

‘자기 조직화(Self-Organization)’의 사례

The Case  for "Self-Organization"

초록 
이번 연구는 2009년에 홍대 앞 소규모 대안공간들인 프레파라트 연구소, 갤러리 킹, 그 문화가 주축이 되어서 진행된 1회 《홍벨트》 페스티벌을 중심으로 당시의 젊은 세대, 혹은 그들의 표현대로라면 2세대 대안공간의 기획과 운영방향이 어떻게 변화되었는지를 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 통하여 1990년대 말에 설립된 대안공간들과 2000년대 중반에 생겨난 대안공간들의 역할과 정체성의 변화를 고전적인 의미에서의 ‘비영리성, 실험성’ 등의 측면에서 비교분석하게 된다. 특히 세 기관의 기획 방식, 온라인 갤러리와 대중화 전략을 큐레이터이자 이론가인 칼센(Karlsen)이 인용한 네트워크 사회구조와 자기-조직화의 이론에 근거해서 살펴본다. 이를 통하여 홍대 앞 2세대 대안공간들이 국내 미술계에서 2000년대 중후반 대안공간의 고전적인 정의에 의문을 제기하고 젊은 작가들과 소규모 전시공간의 생존전략을 모색함으로써 지난 2-3년간 국내 미술계의 비평적 관심을 모았던 ‘신생공간’ 현상을 예견하였는지를 되짚어보고자 한다.

 

Abstract
The study examines how the curatorial direction and managerial strategies were shifted among the second generation of alternative spaces in the Hongik University areas, particularly focusing on "Preparat Lab," "Gallery King," and "Art, Etc.," the spaces which has also organized the first Hongbelt Festival in 2009. I compare their changing roles and identities with those of the first generation of major alternative spaces in South Korea, in terms of the "non-profit" and "experimental" categories. Karlsen's curatorial strategies in Self-Organized(2013), inspired by Castells's Network society theory. will be also utilized to analyze their curatorial approach, on-line galleries, and user-friendly programs for the general public. Through this, the study demonstrates how the second generation has questioned the traditional definition of alternative spaces in South Korean contemporary arts, as well as examines how their attempts in the late 2000s foresees the recent boom of small exhibition spaces, called "newly built(Shinseng) spaces," which again brought the issues of institutional survival on the table.
